There’s a certain kind of family photo I keep coming back to.


Not the perfectly arranged one. Not the one where everyone is looking at the camera at exactly the same time.


It’s the photo where someone’s hair is blowing across their face. Where little hands are covered in sand. Where toes are dirty, jeans are rolled up, and a toddler is halfway between running away and asking to be picked up.


Those are usually the photographs that feel the most alive.

For this recent family session at Ocean Beach, we kept things simple. Mom, dad, their toddler, jeans, bare feet, and a clear morning by the water. There was no pressure to make every frame feel polished or precious. We walked, played, got sandy, and let the session unfold around them.


That’s the kind of family photography I’m drawn to most - thoughtful and intentional, but not over-controlled.


Because polished doesn’t have to mean perfect.

Sometimes the photograph that matters most is the one that brings back the feeling of the day: the wind, the sand, the way your child moved, the way everyone looked when they forgot about the camera for a minute.


Afterward, the family told me they ended up making a whole beach day out of it and their toddler didn’t want to leave the beach.


That might be my favorite kind of feedback.


The photographs matter, of course. But I also want the experience itself to feel like something worth remembering.
